Michael Roth joined Caldwell Leslie in November 2004 after clerking for the Honorable A. Wallace Tashima, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the Honorable Consuelo B. Marshall, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Prior to that, Mr. Roth was an associate at the law firm of Latham & Watkins in the firm’s Los Angeles office. Mr. Roth attended UCLA Law School where he graduated in May 2001, and was Order of the Coif and Editor of the UCLA Law Review.

Before attending law school, Mr. Roth worked for several years in the music industry. He was the Director of Alternative Music at an internationally known record label before starting his own independent record company. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in May 1991 from Tufts University.

Since joining Caldwell Leslie, Mr. Roth’s practice has been diverse, with a focus on complex entertainment and business litigation, and unfair business practices cases. Mr. Roth has worked with other Caldwell Leslie attorneys to obtain successful results on numerous appeals before the Ninth Circuit, the California Court of Appeal, and the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. Mr. Roth was twice-honored as a "Southern California Super Lawyer Rising Star" by the publishers of Los Angeles magazine and Law and Politics magazine.

Most recently, Mr. Roth spent two months in the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office TAP Program, during which time he tried six criminal cases to jury verdicts.


Representative Cases

 Mr. Roth successfully represented the Santa Monica Rent Control Board against due process and takings challenges to Santa Monica’s rent control law before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal and the California Court of Appeal.

 Mr. Roth worked extensively to obtain summary judgment for a major oil company, and to have the judgment affirmed by the California Court of Appeal, in a lawsuit regarding the environmental cleanup of an abandoned oil field in Santa Barbara County.

 In a pro bono representation, Mr. Roth briefed and successfully argued before the Appellate Division of the Los Angeles Superior Court for the reversal of a default judgment against an individual in a personal injury case.

 In a pro bono representation regarding financial elder abuse, Mr. Roth worked with Bet Tzedek Legal Services to successfully obtain the return of his client’s real property and money that had been stolen by a caregiver. For his contribution of over 50 hours on the matter, Mr. Roth received the California State Bar’s Wiley W. Manual Award for pro bono legal services.

When not at work Mr. Roth enjoys spending time with his wife and nine year old son who loves the Ramones. Mr. Roth coaches little league baseball and referees AYSO soccer games. Mr. Roth continues to be passionate about music and has an extensive collection of 7” vinyl records which he enjoys listening to in addition to his iPod.
